- Recall the concept of quadratic polynomials and correlate with linear equation and quadratic equation
- Represent the equation n general form as ax2 + bx + c = 0 where a, b, c are real numbers a ≠ 0
- Solve the quadratic equation by using different methods
- Recall factorization method and
- apply the same to quadratic equation
- Apply the method of completing the squares to solve a quadratic equation and show the same geometrically
- Calculate discriminant to find nature of roots and apply the same to solve a quadratic equation.

Lesson Development
The word “quadratic” comes from “quadratum”, the Latin word for square. Hence, we define a quadratic equation as an equation where the variable is of the second degree. Therefore, a quadratic equation is also called an “Equation of Degree 2”.
Quadratic Equation
ax2 + bx + c = 0, a ≠ 0, is called the standard form of quadratic equation For example :
(i) 2×2+5x+3=0; Here, a=2, b=3 and c=5
(ii) (ii) x 2-3x=0; Here, a=1 , b=-3 and c=0
But sometimes, the quadratic equation does not come in the standard form. These are the hidden quadratic equations which we may have to reduce to the standard form. Here are some examples:

Solution of a Quadratic Equation by Factorisation
A real number α is called a root of the quadratic equation
ax2 + bx + c = 0, a ≠ 0 if a α 2+ bα + c = 0.
We also say that x = α is a solution of the quadratic equation, or that α satisfies the quadratic equation.
Note that the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial ax2 + bx + c and the roots of the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 are the same
Relation with other subjects
Sports In athletic events that involve throwing objects like the shot put, balls or javelin, quadratic equations become highly useful. Distance Formula in physics If you know how fast and how long something was traveling, you can solve for the distance traveled.

CASE STUDY 1:
Basketball and soccer are played with a spherical ball. Even though an athlete dribbles the ball in both sports, a basketball player uses his hands and a soccer player uses his feet.
Usually, soccer is played outdoors on a large field and basketball is played indoor on a court made out of wood. The projectile (path traced) of soccer ball and basketball are in the form of parabola representing quadratic polynomial.
